Can you use a
month by month policy to get a car out the police pound?
The answer is yes, they should accept it. A month by
month policy is just the same as a normal annual policy,
except that it is renewable each month rather than being
contracted to last for a full year. This is completely
different from short term car insurance policies which
only last from between one day and 28 days, and which
cannot be extended for longer periods, and which are not
acceptable for this purpose.
You will need to take along your driving licence, some
photo ID if you do not have a photo on your licence,
your insurance certificate and proof of entitlement to
take the car; the logbook would be perfect for this
purpose. Oh, and your credit card; there will be some
pretty hefty fees to pay.

Every year a
great many people take along friends who have car
insurance which entitles them to drive any vehicle which
does not belong to them, but almost invariably there is
a condition on these policies which states that they
cannot be used for getting vehicles out of police pounds
on behalf of other people; it is necessary for you to
get the vehicle out yourself, using your own insurance.
If you cannot do this and you need to get a friend to
collect the car for you he or she must be able to
produce the same documents, plus a letter of authority
from you; and again must produce evidence of insurance
which covers the vehicle. It may then be necessary for
this person to take out a month by month policy for that
car, unless he or she is one of the very rare people
whose regular car insurance permits driving 'any vehicle
not belonging 'but without the usual stipulation
regarding police pounds. If in any doubt at all this
person should check carefully with the insurance company
involved to avoid risking an abortive journey.
